Gillingham 3 MK Dons 1: Match reaction from Gills boss Steve Evans

Gillingham boss Steve Evans felt his side could have made a decent scoreline a bit more special on Saturday.

The Gills beat MK Dons 3-1 at Priestfield but had chances at the end to put the icing on the cake. Evans was disappointed that they didn’t.

He said: “When it went 3-1 up I thought it would finish four or five and if we had taken a bit more care in the final third I think it would have done.

“I am disappointed we didn’t go and make it four or five because we have got ourselves in great positions in their box but nothing fell to us in that area, we will take the three points, move on and get ready for Portman Road (to face Ipswich Town on Boxing Day).”

The Gills were 2-0 up at the break, opening the scoring with a good finish from Mikael Mandron and an even better pass from Olly Lee to create it.

“Few could do what Lee does there,” said the Gills boss.

Steve Evans tells Kent Online the win over MK Dons could have been bigger

“It was a fantastic header from Mika. He had to lift it and he needed to generate power on the ball and it was a fantastic finish.

“We get the goal and we are straight back at them and Brandon Hanlan scored with a great finish to put us 2-0 up. The disappointing thing for me was that we weren’t done and dusted by the 45 minutes.”

MK came back at them with a quality finish from Alex Gilbey, flicking the ball past Barry Fuller before finishing.

“It was like Sammy the Seal,” quipped Evans.

“It was about our reaction then and we had to remain solid for five or 10 minutes. It’s brilliant that we then go back to 3-1 deficit with something we have worked on the training ground with for three or four days now.”

It was Lee’s free-kick, off a Tom O’Connor touch, that led to Ehmer scoring, as he fired home the loose ball.

Evans said: “It was a great finish from Max.

“I had spoken to the lads long and hard, all week, and before the game that if we wanted to believe that Fleetwood was a really good point (the Gills drew there last week) then we would have to win against MK Dons.

“Apart from a 10 minute spell when they made it 2-1, five or 10 minutes when they became the better team but I think arguably and unless Russell Martin (the MK manager) doesn’t read the game the same as me, I think at half-time we’re unlucky it’s not four or five.

“I was really pleased with the first half performance on a difficult pitch and you understand the difficulty give the rain that has been on it.
