Postponed match puts return of injured Gillingham players Bradley Garmston and Lee Martin on hold

Bradley Garmston and Lee Martin have been forced to wait another week to get back in action.

The pair were due to be involved in a behind-closed-doors match on Wednesday but that has been put back a week because of the weather.

It will be a big step forward for both players, particularly Martin, who has yet to feature for the Gills.

A broken and dislocated ankle in pre-season has left him sidelined since the summer.

Boss Ady Pennock said: “Lee Martin will be involved in that game. Both will have 45 minutes to an hour. We will assess it at half-time.

“It will be like two new signings for me and we need competition.

“It is very important we get them back but we can’t rush them back. Lee had a terrible injury but he is a good lad, he is working hard, the same as Bradley.

“There are others in the squad who have not been playing. They need games. I was going to have the game on Wednesday but that was called off, which was disappointing.”

Garmston has twice picked up hamstring injuries since suffering a serious pre-season injury himself, dislocating his kneecap. Pennock won’t rush him back.

“I know him well and he is a good kid but we just have to manage him,” Pennock said.

"There is no point just putting him straight back in the team because he will break down again. We have to man-manage him.

“He is itching to get back but if he breaks down for the third time then mentally for him that’s not going to be good and not going to be good for us. We have to get that right and if it means he waits for another few weeks to get involved then we will do that.

“I don’t think I have seen anyone as fast as Bradley, except when I played years ago. I was lightning over that first yard!

"It will be good to get them back but we have to be sensible.”
