Gillingham boss Steve Lovell hopes to make improvements ahead of Barnsley trip

Gillingham have been working on filling in the gaps ahead of their weekend trip to Barnsley.

Boss Steve Lovell feels they have been too open in some of their play and wants that sorted before facing one of last season’s relegated Championship sides.

It could also mean changing some of the personnel.

Lovell said: “We might change it up a bit on Saturday. I have to change the starting line-up anyway because of injuries to Mark (Byrne) and Regan (Charles-Cook) but we will see how we go.

“I think sometimes you have to give teams a little bit of respect and perhaps deal with what they can throw at you in the first 15-20 minutes, rather than going gung-ho and being caught on the backfoot.

“I will never go out and just defend, but we have to be mindful of what their strengths are and deal with them. We know what our strengths are.

“I will put eleven out there and play one way and with the same eleven we could change it and play a different way, it all depends how the game goes but I feel that we have to not go so all-out attack, which we have been.

“It’s great entertainment, even on Saturday it was a good one, but for us it was too open and I can’t have gaps everywhere and that is something we have been working on. We have worked out what the problem was, so we will put that into practice ready to go to Barnsley.”
