A recent survey – conducted by the entertainment site Casivo.co.uk - sheds some light on the appreciation Gillingham fans receive from their rival supporters.

After asking 2,400 football fans (100 match-attending fans from each team) to rank which away fans they like the most, the supporters of Gillingham appear to be the second most liked away fans according to rival supporters.

The top five liked supporters in League 2 were Mansfield, Gillingham, Barrow, Stockport County and Grimsby Town.

Of those Gillingham supporters that were quizzed, Walsall fans were voted the worst followers and picked up the least votes overall, leaving them ranked bottom of League 2.

Gillingham’s historic rivals Swindon were still surprisingly appreciated by fans at ME7, choosing them as being the most appreciated.

A spokesperson for the pollsters said: “Rivalries between football clubs, especially in League 2, often span generations, contributing to a complex mix of emotions and passion among supporters.

“The love and hate relationship between fans of different clubs can create an atmosphere charged with intensity during matches.

“However, the survey suggests that despite these rivalries, there is a level of respect and appreciation for the away fans in the league.”

The Gills’ away supporters have to put in the miles to support their team - with a 700-mile round trip to Barrow coming up on a Tuesday night in March - but regularly get good numbers in relation to their rivals.

A relatively short trip to MK Dons is coming up this Saturday and the Gills fans were quick to snap up the initial 514 tickets on offer. Another batch has been made available and they are now on sale.
