Louis Greene defends Commonwealth super-welter title against Sam Gilley on Joshua Buatsi versus Dan Azeez undercard at the O2 on Saturday

Louis Greene makes the second defence of his commonwealth title this Saturday - and he’s predicting fireworks.

Sam Gilley is attempting to wrestle the super welterweight belt off the ‘Medway Mauler’ this weekend in a fight that’s to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Greene (16-3) won the Commonwealth title with a knock-out victory against Dean Sutherland in November last year and successfully defended it in May, with another stoppage victory, this time defeating Paul Kean.

His London opponent Gilley (16-1) has stopped half of his opponents inside the distance. There’s respect between the fighters out of the ring and this one’s expected to be a close contest.

Greene, speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the big fight night, said: “You feel like you can beat or knock out anyone you fight, if you don’t then you shouldn't be in the sport.

“I believe I can beat Sam, he believes he can beat me, with his style and my style there’s going to be fireworks, it’s going to go off.”

Greene’s not had it easy in his journey so far, taking on many tough fighters, which is the way he thinks it should be.

He said: “This is combat, we’re here to fight and when you’ve stopped boxing do you want to have a look at your record and have a list of 30 men who just danced for a few rounds or do you want to be in memorable fights?

“My kids are proud of the fights I have been involved in, they like watching them. You want to feel like you’ve achieved something. You want to be part of something, make yourself something, I don’t want to be remembered for nothing.”

Greene is currently ranked no.4 in the UK and Saturday’s fight should see the winner compete next for the British title, as this one’s down as the final eliminator contest for the domestic crown, which is currently held by Samuel Antwi.

Sparring sessions with the likes of Fred Secular, fellow Medway boxer Grant Dennis and Alex Cole, along with some top amateurs, have helped get Greene into top shape ahead of his latest fight.

Dad and coach John Greene, said: “On paper it is an even fight but Louis is in superb shape now after a very good training camp and he’s ready to go.”
