Former winger Matt Jarvis salutes Gillingham fans for positive reception on first return to Priestfield

Matt Jarvis thanked for the Gills fans for their support on Saturday.

The Walsall winger got an excellent reception at Priestfield before the match, and again when he was substituted late on.

It was Jarvis’ first appearance back at Priestfield since 2007, when he left for Wolves after making more than 100 appearances for the Gills.

Jarvis tweeted: “Thank you Gillingham for a fantastic reception. It was much appreciated and great to be back where it all began.

“Good luck for the rest of the season.”

Jarvis produced an eye-catching performance and set up Walsall’s second goal, crossing for Andy Cook.

“(We) showed what we are about,” said Jarvis, now 32.

“Just what we wanna see on a regular basis, Jarvis cross cooky header GOAL!!!”

Gills boss Steve Lovell admitted Jarvis had caused them problems.

”You would expect him to,” said Lovell, who was at the club when Jarvis first signed for Gillingham following his release from
Millwall.

“He crossed it for the second goal, but we come across players like that all season and have dealt with them.

“It was not so much him but the goals, the actual fella (Cook) sticking them in the back of the net that is the problem, we never dealt with him.”
