Gillingham manager Steve Lovell ready to give others a chance against Scunthorpe United including Wigan loanee Leo Da Silva Lopes

Leo Da Silva Lopes could be set for a starting role for Gillingham this weekend.

Boss Steve Lovell was furious at the way his team played against Barnsley last Saturday and will ring the changes for the arrival of Scunthorpe.

Attacking midfielder Lopes has played just 20 minutes since joining on loan from Wigan Athletic.

He was one of several new players brought in before the transfer window closed.

“They are up to speed and in contention for a starting place now,” Lovell said.

“I would like to make changes, I will possibly make quite a few.

“We had a meeting after Saturday and made the players aware of what they are supposed to be doing, what they are not doing and why we are losing games.

“They have been really good about it and they understand but it is no good understanding if it is not going to be carried out.

“Players have got to learn that if they are not doing what they should be doing on the field then there is no place for them out there and other people have got to be given a chance.

“For me, as a manager, I need to take action and I have got players in during the transfer window and will give them an opportunity to try and help us. Let’s see what they can do.”

Tahvon Campbell is on loan from Forest Green but has yet to play, while Billy King and Graham Burke made their first home starts last weekend.

Josh Rees has been nursing a groin strain this week but should be back in training today (Thursday).

Billy Bingham has been back in full training for a week and is in contention.

“We have missed Billy in midfield,” added Lovell.

“The four I brought in will all be involved at some stage on Saturday and I will pick the team as the week goes on.

“In training on Tuesday we had an 11 versus 11 and it was excellent. Perhaps a change is imminent.”
