Gillingham manager Steve Lovell is chasing a couple of signings midway through the transfer window

New signings could be on the horizon at Priestfield and boss Steve Lovell hopes to have a fresh face in by the weekend.

Lovell is happy with his current squad – he said as such last week – but opportunities have arisen to make a couple of loan signings and Lovell looks set to take them up.

“I am trying to get a couple in,” he said.

“That is something we are trying hard on now. There is a chance before the weekend, one, possibly two.

“I am happy with the squad but going through the remainder of the season I don’t want to be left short, which we are not if everyone is fit, but if there is a chance of getting a couple in that we feel could add something to the squad I will.

“The next four or five games are important in the league for us.”

The Gills have until the end of the month to do any more business and may have to be patient with one of their targets.

Lovell hasn’t ruled out any other additions, either, should they fit the bill.

He said: “If something comes up and we think it is worth doing, we will do it.

“I am not saying that if someone comes available and it is the right person we are not going to go for them. If we can use this window to our advantage we will do.”

Gills haven’t seen anyone depart in this window, but striker Conor Wilkinson – back from a loan spell at Dagenham – failed to make the squad for Burton.

Fellow striker Liam Nash was involved, however, and played in a practice game on Tuesday.

Lovell said: “I felt that Nashy really deserved his opportunity on the bench because he has worked hard, gone out and scored goals.

“He is a little different, a nippy player that maybe in the last 15 minutes could win a game for you.”
