More: “We could have scored nine!”

Gills manager Neil Harris has a place in the squad available for Malone if he wants to join but the 32-year-old has yet to commit. There are two weeks left before the 2023/24 season gets under way.

Malone, who was released by Millwall this summer, showed in last week’s game against Charlton that he can bring quality to the side but Harris has already said there are Championship sides looking at him.

Harris said on Tuesday he was keen to get the situation resolved but is also willing to let the player look at other options. Max Clark has joined to fill the left-back spot but Malone would be a bonus addition.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, Harris said: “Scott was still with us Thursday and Friday.

“Scott wasn’t going to start (against Dartford), he wasn’t necessarily going to get any minutes within the group, nothing has changed with Scott, he is still with us, still training, still progressing with us.

“The option to come to us is still very much on the table, but we have been very clear with where Scott is at, we are being very patient.”
