The match ended 1-1 with Trae Coyle converting a free-kick before Serhat Tasdemir levelled for the hosts.

Gillingham included a handful of senior players, including John Akinde, Alex MacDonald, Robbie McKenzie and Christian Maghoma, back in training after a Covid-19 scare.

Young Gills keeper Joe Walsh, who recently impressed in the Carabao Cup match at Stoke City, was busy early on, saving from the likes of George Boyd and Tasdemir.

Walsh made a fingertip save to deny Boyd in the second half and he also held onto an effort from Harrison Burrows.

Gillingam scored from their first effort on target, a free-kick converted by Arsenal loan player Coyle.

Posh continued to make their chances count, with Walsh busy throughout, denying Benjamin Mensah after his good run but the hosts finally netted when Boyd crossed for Tasdemir to finish.

Academy player Ishola almost scored a late winner for Posh but went wide.

Peterborough starting XI: Gyollai, Mason, Blake-Tracy, Naismith, Burrows, Kanu, Tasdemir, Hamilton, Brown, Boyd, F Clarke.

Gillingham starting XI: Walsh, McKenzie, Maghoma, Drysdale, Nelson, Woods, MacDonald, Sithole, Chambers, Coyle, Akinde.
