Gillingham boss Steve Evans is working round the clock to improve his squad.
He was meeting potential recruits this week and hopes to add several more faces before the transfer deadline on Monday, September 2.
Evans was hoping for at least one new signing ahead of Saturday’s home game against Burton Albion.
“We know the two or three that we want to get in,” said the Gills boss.
“I met the representatives of a couple of players on Tuesday and went up to watch Manchester United under-23s at Rotherham in the evening.
“I left at 5.30am that day so I could meet a player before training and got back in the early hours but that doesn’t matter to me; that is what it takes to make sure you are looking at all the options available to you.
“We are working really hard and the chairman has been brilliantly supportive. He just wants us to stick to the numbers we had last year, to work within those numbers, and he is delighted with what we have put together. We are delivering our side, within the numbers and these next two or three signings are very important to us.”
Value for money is key for Evans as he knows he hasn’t got a budget to compete with the top sides in the division.
He said: “We have to make sure that when we add to the group, we are adding strength and unity to the group. We are not going to go and sign individual superstars because we are not going to be able to afford that.
“We believe we have got some good value for money. There is not a supporter who follows the Gills that with everything they do in life, whether they buy a car, a new shirt, or a pair of jeans, they just want to make sure they get value for money.”
