Defender Ben Nugent a worthy starter at Plymouth, says Gillingham boss Steve Lovell

Steve Lovell explained the simple reasoning behind his defensive selection at the weekend.

Ben Nugent got the nod for the league game at Plymouth over Gabriel Zakuani, who has previously been a virtual ever-present when available.

Zakuani had been rested for the midweek Checkatrade Trophy match against Oxford, handing Nugent a chance, and Lovell felt he took it.

Gills boss Lovell said: “Ben Nugent played in the week and did very well and so he plays. Sean Clare did very well in the week so he plays.

“The boys know the way I work.

“If people do well then they stay in the team, that is the only way to play it and they have to wait for their opportunity again. If that happens then they will have a go.

“At the moment I have a few defenders to choose from and I will play them when and if they deserve to play.”
