Gillingham head coach Ady Pennock wants hassle-free preparation for Scunthorpe clash

Gills head coach Ady Pennock will be hoping to avoid any late dramas this weekend.

Pennock’s pre-match plans have been hampered in the last three weeks due to late withdrawals.

Scott Wagstaff missed the trip to Bury last weekend after a training ground injury leading up to the game.

Bradley Dack was another to pick up an injury on the eve of a game.

“It’s been unbelievable,” said the coach. “Every time we do have a team in mind, come the end of Friday’s session or early Saturday morning, we find out so-and-so is poorly, injured or not fit and it throws everything out the window.

“It’s happened for the last three weeks. I have had people pull out on Saturday morning, that late, but we have had to adjust and get on with it.”

Pennock will be waiting on the fitness of several players ahead of their home match against Scunthorpe.

Wagstaff’s knee injury makes him a doubt, as does a groin problem for defender Deji Oshilaja.

Ryan Jackson hobbled off last weekend with a groin injury and Chris Herd is still trying to shake off a knee injury, leaving the Gills short of defensive options.

Young defender Mitchell Dickenson came off the bench last Saturday and he could be pushing for a starting place if the injuries don’t clear up.

Pennock said: “I had no hesitation in putting him on. I have been working with him, one-on-ones, and he knew how we wanted things done.

“He did ever so well. I am pleased for him and he was buzzing afterwards.”
