Gillingham boss Steve Evans expects at least one new signing before Burton Albion match

Gillingham could have three new faces in by the weekend – but boss Steve Evans won’t be taking a punt.

He’s looking for additions that will be able to go straight into his League 1 side.

“I certainly expect to see one,” he said, when asked about new recruits.

“Hopefully we’ll have two or three.

“I sat with the chairman during parts of the game on Saturday and I think I have done his left ear in. That has been shot to bits. He’ll need some time off but he wants to support us.

“We are operating within the same numbers (financially) as last year and we still have three players’ wages to bring in.

“We are light in some areas and we are trying really hard but I have really resisted taking players for the sake of it.

“Maybe in the past, the same as every other manager, you think ‘there you go, he might do the job’ but I am resisting it. I have not done it.

“Darragh MacAnthony, my previous chairman (at Peterborough) said to me at times, ‘you have maybe gambled a bit there’ and he was 100% right.

“If they are not going to be better then I am not going to be bringing them in.

“We have to think that we are improving the group. It doesn’t mean they start every week but you would like them to have a big part to play.”

The Gills got their season under way at Doncaster on Saturday, leaving with a point after a 1-1 draw.

They host Burton on Saturday. Alex Jakubiak gave the visitors the lead but the hosts deservedly fought back.

“We are on the right road but we have work to do and for one or two key players to join,” Evans added.

The Gills manager may be looking for additions, but there was plenty to be happy about at Doncaster.

He said: “There were some promising signs and we’ll go back on the training ground and work hard.

“We will let other people think about what might have been.

“I said to the players, did we do enough to win the game? Yes, certainly first half. Did we do enough to win it after we turned level? No. I would say a draw was fair.

“We are a group that are still learning.

“We are much better now than when we came in and we will be much better when we complete our signings.”
