Justin Edinburgh says he still has the backing of Gillingham chairman Paul Scally

Under-fire Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh says he retains the full support of chairman Paul Scally.

Edinburgh revealed the pair speak about Gills’ problems every day.

And while some fans are calling for a change at the helm with Gills 18th in League 1, Edinburgh is confident Mr Scally is behind him.

Edinburgh said: “I speak daily with the chairman and he’s been at this football club for a very long time.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him, he’s very supportive, he’s very understanding. I’ve got his full support and that makes my job a lot easier.

“We speak at length and we try to find answers and solve the problems. It’s not that easy but it’s not that far away.”

Gills mounted an unexpected promotion push last season and while they want to challenge again, there’s no pressure from the boardroom.

Edinburgh, whose team host Charlton on Saturday, said: “In terms of targets set, nothing by the chairman. He’s totally aware of how far and how much we over-achieved last year.

“I believe in what I’m doing. You don’t become a bad manager overnight.

“I was given this job (20 months ago) because the chairman felt I was the right person. I don’t think anything’s changed."
