Gillingham defender Shad Ogie might be getting less stick off his team-mates after his goal on Saturday - his first in the Football League.

Head coach Stephen Clemence joked that he’d been giving the 22-year-old some stick for his lack of goals and his team-mates had also noticed.

Clean sheets are more important than goals for the Irish defender but finding the net helps too. Fellow centre-back Conor Masterson is the club’s leading scorer with five and now Ogie’s got one too.

He was in the right place at the right time to head home the opening goal on Saturday. Remeao Hutton’s corner was cleared but when Ethan Coleman sent it back into the mix, big defender Ogie was there to nod it home.

Clemence said: “I have been giving him a bit of a stick and now he has finally got one so I am really pleased for him.

“He is a great lad, he is still a young player and he doesn’t look it, the size of him and the way he moves, but he is still learning the game.

“He still might make the odd mistake but I am really pleased he can enjoy that and the lads can stop giving him stick because he’s got a goal!”

Ogie’s played 38 games for the Gills so far this season following his summer move. His previous goals came in the National League for Dover and Aldershot while on loan from Leyton Orient.

Grabbing Gills’ second goal at Salford was Tim Dieng, following his winner the week before against Wrexham.

Clemence said: “Tim is a really good finisher and you see that in training, even finishing drills he is up there with one of the best in the group.

“He gets a chance and generally if he doesn’t take it he is close, you know he is a goal threat but the way he rampaged around the pitch as well winning the ball back and doing his bit for the team, you know what you are going to get from Tim and well done to him.”
