Gillingham captain Josh Wright speaks out after fans call for manager Justin Edinburgh to be sacked

Gillingham skipper Josh Wright insists the team are right behind the manager.

Wright posted a plea on social media for Gills fans to get behind Justin Edinburgh.

The Gills were challenging at the top of League 1 last season but a year on are 19 in the table.

On Saturday they fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with non-league Brackley Town in the first round of the FA Cup.

Wright admits the team “should be doing better” but came to the defence of Edinburgh, who received a vocal thumbs down from fans at Priestfield.

He said: “The gaffer, his assistant and all his staff are the best people for this club and to turn it around.

“The boys love him and want to do well for him but we are all going through a hard time together, something everyone, not just in football, but in the world go through no matter what they do in life.

“I know it will be hard for you (the fans) to see this because I am a football fan myself but the gaffer, along with us, are too good not to come through the other side.

“As captain, I have decided to do this off my own back and I’m asking you great fans to stick with us and help us get through this difficult period.”

Edinburgh praised his team’s character on Saturday after their fightback but knows a 2-2 draw wasn’t good enough.

His players know it too.

Max Ehmer tweeted: “Not good enough, simple as that,” and Billy Knott said: “Fuming, not good enough at all.”

Edinburgh insisted after Saturday's game he was no quitter. Click here for his reaction.
