Manager Peter Taylor look set to make a number of changes for Gillingham’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match at Colchester.

Competition rules means he has to select at least six players from the team that started on Saturday or the ones that start the following weekend.

Alternatively, a club must include in its starting line-up at least six of the 11 players who have made the most starting appearances in all competitions so far.

Kortney Hause will definitely miss out, as he is on international duty.

Taylor is also likely to rest fellow centre-back John Egan, as he did during the first round match against Stevenage. It will mean Leon Legge and Callum Davies could return to the side.

Taylor said: “I don’t think we have too many injuries from Saturday’s game. I think Egan has a knock but apart from that everyone else is okay.

“The result won’t make a difference (to my selection). Had we won, it doesn’t mean I would have rested players and it doesn’t mean I will play different people because we got beat.

“There is a rule where half a dozen players have to be involved. We will take a strong team to Colchester because we want to get through.”

Goalkeeper Stuart Nelson is back in full training following a hand injury and is closing in on a return. He will be named in the matchday squad.

Opponents Colchester could field new signing Elliott Hewitt against his former side.

Hewitt has joined on loan from Ipswich Town for a month. He played 20 games for the Gills last season on loan.
