Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh says side will come good despite one league win in seven after 2-1 loss at home to Oldham

We’re looking up, not down, insists Gills boss Justin Edinburgh.

Gillingham lost to bottom-of-the-table Oldham at Priestfield on Saturday, having thrown away a one-goal lead, but Edinburgh remains confident they will come good.

One league win in seven matches has left them trailing the leading clubs – and they remain as close to the drop zone as the play-off places – but it’s not too late for a turnaround.

A defiant Edinburgh said: “As the weeks go by I have no doubts we will become stronger and better. If I get the squad fit and all personnel available for selection then we will be looking up rather than down, that’s for sure.”

The Gills have been besieged by injuries this season but the return of Cody McDonald, Bradley Dack and Scott Wagstaff at the weekend boosted the manager’s options, and with more players on the way back, Edinburgh is confident he will have the tools to succeed.

“The positive (from Saturday) is that we had players back in the starting line-up,” he said. "We had no injuries and players have got through some minutes. It increases competition for places.”

Gillingham were booed off on Saturday, losing the game with just one minute remaining after a poor second half, and, asked if he was feeling under pressure, Edinburgh said: “Since I have been here I have never had anything other than support from the football club, the supporters and the players.

“They continue to do that and I don’t feel any pressure at all.”
