The Shouting Men: Gillingham midfielder Ollie Muldoon writes exclusively for the KM Group

Moving to Gillingham will hopefully give me the chance to express myself. I wasn’t given a chance at Charlton and I needed a change. It’s good that I left.

We’ve got them coming up over Easter and I can’t wait for that game.

It has felt a bit weird being at a different club. I have only ever played for Charlton since I was a kid, joining their under-9 team.

But I know Gillingham well after playing here on loan back in 2015. A few of the lads are still around, the likes of Nels, Cody, Dacky and Max, and that helped me settle.

I made my first Football League appearance during that loan spell, against Bristol City, so it’s nice to be back at the club that gave me my debut.

Once I got released by Charlton, at the end of January, I spoke to Steve Lovell (the Gills first team coach) and he got me a chance to play in front of the manager.

Steve coached me as an under-16 and he was a legend, he is good at what he does.

When I left Charlton, I just had to back myself. I believe I am good enough to be playing and I didn’t get too down, I just got my head down and worked hard.

I got a game here and that allowed the manager to see me. It was the first time I had been involved in a trial match since I was a kid. I just tried to take it like any other game and it went as good as it could have done.

I managed to get on the scoresheet and haven’t scored a goal like that for a few years – it’s definitely up there with the best in my career.

At first I was told that they couldn’t really do anything until next season but I got a call a week later and we managed to get something done.

I signed the deal on Monday and it was nice to be included in the squad for Tuesday night against AFC Wimbledon.

I was over the moon to get it sorted and hopefully if I do what I am there to do, I will get a longer deal at the end of it. For the next 13 games, I hope to help keep the team in League 1 and do as well as I can.

The team did well on Tuesday and gave a good account of themselves. Wimbledon are not an easy team to play, they are physical but the boys handled themselves well.

We’ve got good competition in midfield but it is better to have too many players than not enough.
