Tom O’Connor revelled in his forward role on Tuesday.

The Gills switched to wing-backs as they chased the game against Bristol Rovers, trailing by a single goal.

It meant the Southampton loan defender was given the freedom to get further forward from his regular left-back spot.

He found himself with the ball at his feet from close-range and made no mistake to fire the Gills level.

“I did enjoy it and it’s something that is new to me,” said the 20-year-old, when asked about his wing-back role.

“Changing it to three at the back allowed me to get forward more, I found myself in attacking positions and it is enjoyable when you are higher up the pitch.

“I was delighted to get my first (senior professional) goal. It’s always good to score and to do it in the league is even more special. I found myself in the right position, luckily the ball dropped for me in the right spot and it was an easy finish.”

The Gills ended the game well but it took some time for them to get going.

“First half wasn’t the best,” admitted the Irishman. “We didn’t really get out of the blocks so I suppose a 1-1 draw we will take.

“We were positive going into the game and looking for the win, but it’s not the end of the world, it’s better than a loss.

“It keeps our unbeaten run going, it’s four in the league now. We have a tough game on Saturday now (at home to Ipswich) and we hope to keep it going.”
