Gillingham boosted by weekend point against Charlton Athletic

Saturday’s impressive performance against Charlton was proof Gillingham can be challenging at the top end of League 1, according to defender Connor Ogilvie.

The Gills had enough chances to win the game and there was disappointment in the camp that they didn’t. But on reflection, Ogilvie thinks they can take much from it.

“It was a good team performance,” said the 24-year-old, having ended a run of six straight league wins for their opponents.

“We were disappointed not to take all three points but it was one of our better performances this year and we can take that into AFC Wimbledon now (on Tuesday night).

“If we perform like that every week I don’t see why we can’t be up there come the end of the season.”

The Gills have just ended a run against most of the division’s leading sides and face Wimbledon tomorrow, a side sitting three points better off than them in the league.

It’s a team with plenty of familiar faces, with former Gills players Luke O’Neill and Callum Reilly both in the AFC camp.

Ogilvie said: “Wimbledon is always a good game to play in, against a few boys that were here, Luke O’Neill and that and I am looking forward to it. Hopefully we can get all three points on Tuesday.

“It will be good to see a few familiar faces and hopefully we can turn them over and get the three points.”

The Dons had the upper hand last season, winning both league fixtures.

“We should have got something out of those two games,” Ogilvie said. “But we didn’t and that’s football but we will prepare right and get ready to take all three points.”

Ogilvie mentioned the heroics of keeper Jack Bonham following the weekend draw against Charlton, the Gills goalie saving a first half penalty as he continues to excel for the club.

He said: “Jack made a fantastic save to his right hand side. He is a great keeper, a great lad and that penalty showed how good he is, hopefully he can continue it. He makes it a lot easier for us when he is making big saves like he does.”
