Arsenal loan forward Trae Coyle reacts to Gillingham's victory over Swindon Town

Gillingham loan forward Trae Coyle scored with a cool finish to seal a 2-0 win over Swindon Town but knows the team need to improve.

The Arsenal youngster came off the bench and scored the second goal with 10 minutes left to give Gillingham some breathing space in a tough game at Priestfield.

He said: “The performance wasn’t as good as we wanted and the first half was a bit slow but three points is the main thing.

"We weren’t at our best but it was enough to get us the win. We know we have to improve on it.

“It is good to know that you can win when you are nowhere near as you should be, that’s a positive, but we definitely want to improve.”

Commenting on his goal, he said: “It was a great a pass from Dom (Samuel). I had a lot of time and I backed myself to score. I am confident infront of goal. It was a good chance, I would say it was an easy one, but I am delighted.”

Coyle has come off the bench in Gills’ last four league games and has started just three games in League 1.

He’ll be hoping his weekend goal and an impressive midweek performance against Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy will help win a starting role.

He said: “If I get the chance to play I will give my all again and hope I can affect the game. It is another competition we want to go far in.

“I really want to score goals and I have been doing it in that competition.”

Coyle scored against Crawley Town and his parent club Arsenal in the group stage which Gillingham qualified from. They play League 2 Cambridge in round two on Tuesday night.

Following the midweek game the Gills have another five in the league before the end of the year and Coyle will be looking to get involved.

He said: “There are a lot of games in this period and we all have to keep fit. It will be the toughest part of the season but I am looking forward to it and hopefully I can be amongst it.

“The Christmas period is going to be tough, there are a lot of games in a short period of time and the gaffer wants us going into that period in a good run of form. Winning games is massive.

“We will try and get as many points as we can in the next couple of weeks and that will stand us in good stead for the new year.”
