Gillingham manager Steve Evans has no interest in playing either Wolves or Stoke City in round three of the Carabao Cup

Gillingham will find out their third round Carabao Cup opponents tonight - but boss Steve Evans remains uninterested.

His side have beaten Southend United and Coventry City in the opening two rounds and even though the Gills could be playing Premier League Wolves in the next round, it remains all about the league for Evans.

The Gills manager has maintained since the start of this season that cup football is of no concern to him as his small squad look to punch above their weight in League 1.

Wolves entertain Stoke City of the Championship tonight (Thursday) with a 7pm kick off and the winner will then get to host the Gills some time next week.

But when asked about facing either one, Evans said: “I have no interest in going there. I have been to Molineux and won. I have never been to Stoke, other than to watch games.

“Both are great clubs in their own right, especially Wolverhampton, with the way they are playing at the moment. I watched their game of football against Sheffield United (which Wolves won 2-0). It is a quality team but thy would make changes and it would be a different eleven for sure whoever we play, whether it be Stoke or Wolves.

“But the boys deserve the opportunity to play at one of those great stadiums. It is just a shame again it will be empty.”

There will be one Gills player who has much interest in Thursday’s result, former Wolves winger Jordan Graham.

He signed for Gillingham in the summer after being released by the club, one which he had spent the last five years at.

Graham was the penalty hero on Tuesday night, netting from the spot in injury-time to take the tie to a shootout, then dispatching another to help the Gills win 5-4 on spot-kicks.

He tweeted afterwards: “Hard work pays off. Delighted to get off the mark for the Gills! Stayed in there until the end and got our rewards! Potentially the next round draw isn’t too bad either.”

Gillingham will also get to know their possible fourth round opponents before playing that third round game. The draw will take place later tonight. The cup draws are being made in advance to help enable clubs and broadcasters to plan ahead amid a busy schedule. The fourth round games are to be played on week commencing September 28.
