Gillingham’s young guns delighted boss Steve Evans on Tuesday night.

The Gills left Bristol Rovers with a point thanks to a late goal from defender Tom O’Connor.

Jack Tucker, 19, was also called into action as replacement for the injured Fuller.

O’Connor, 20, is on loan from Southampton and Tuesday’s match was only his fifth appearance in the Football League.

“He is an outstanding prospect,” said Evans.

“He’s a kid and he’s learning. It’s his first goal and he will have a good career I am sure, as long as he remains level headed and works hard.

“He comes from a good Irish family that just demands those standards and we have no issue with him.

“Every day he comes in with a smile and works hard. I was pleased for him because his performance was good.”

Tucker was making only his second league appearance for the Gills, in the draw at the Memorial Ground, after Fuller limped out of action on 13 minutes.

Evans said: “He got thrown in at right-back and he then played on the right side of a three at the back. I thought he was outstanding for someone so young. We think highly of him.”
