Cyclists of all abilities are invited to raise money for good causes while promoting a cleaner, greener planet at the KM Big Bike Ride.

And leading the way in achieving both goals is renewable energy firm Vattenfall.

The business, which is the key partner for the event, has so far registered 15 riders for the challenge.

There’s still time to join them in the peloton, but anyone interested in doing so needs to act fast to confirm their participation in the April 28 event.

Vattenfall local communications officer Melanie Rogers is one of the riders from the company taking part.

She said all 15 were looking forward to the challenge, adding: “We support the ride because first of all it’s a really good cause, but it’s also a really great team event for us internally.”

Miss Rogers said the ride was a great way for the company to spread its philanthropic reach across as many good causes as possible, and that it helped Vattenfall promote its mission of helping to secure a low-carbon economy.

She explained: “We get approached by some really good causes, but I don’t like to think about any single cause because they’re all very good.

“This is a way of supporting as many charities as possible across Kent, and at the same time it’s a low-carbon event which supports our ambition for fossil-free living within one generation.”

Ride coordinator Hannah Hawksworth said: “It’s so appropriate to have Vattenfall supporting the KM Big Bike Ride.

“A share of the money raised by the challenge will be used to fund the KM Charity Team’s work with schools promoting green travel and clean air, so it’s ideal to have a renewable energy business so closely involved.”

Participants have a choice of 100K and 50K routes starting and finishing at Betteshanger Park near Deal.

Riders can take part just for fun, or to raise money for any good cause of their choice. 70 per cent of sponsorship money will go to the participants’ chosen charities, with the rest helping to fund the KM Charity Team’s child literacy, green travel and road safety work.

And any individual raising £200 or more for charity will go into a draw to win a pair of Eurostar tickets.

It costs £30 per person to take part in the ride, but there is a £5 discount when booking with the discount code KMNews19.

In addition to Vattenfall, the ride is supported by Herberts Cycles, Benenden Hospital Trust, the Southern Co-operative, and SE Medical.
