Oliver Glewis, a Year 3 pupil at Whitstable Junior School, was mascot for the day at Canterbury’s St Lawrence Ground after winning a green travel challenge organised by the KM Charity Team in partnership with Kent construction company WW Martin.

The challenge was part of the charity’s Wow (Walk on Wednesday) scheme, which encourages families to walk, cycle, or ‘park and stride’ for the school run at least once a week.

Oliver, who walks to school every day, won a Kent Spitfires cricket shirt and a bat signed by the club’s players, and also tossed the coin to decide who would bat first.

As part of the prize, £250 worth of books will go to Whitstable Junior School, donated by WW Martin.

WW Martin director and company secretary Neil Peck joined Oliver and Kent captain Sam Billings for the toss, saying: "We’re really pleased to support the Wow scheme to get children fit and healthy and to teach them about road safety."

The match took place on May 29, with Kent winning the rain-affected contest by 28 runs.

Wow encourages families to use green travel, with classes competing each week to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy. A monthly inter-school green travel challenge awards winning classes prizes such as tickets to leisure attractions or visits by storytellers.

Organisations supporting the scheme include Whites Transport, Ashford International Hotel, Orbit, Volker Highways, Countrystyle Recycling, Golding Vision (part of Golding Homes), Specsavers, Eurostar, Three R’s Teacher Recruitment, Whitefriars and Maidstone, Ashford, Kent, Medway and Bexley councils.

Schools have until July 1 to sign up for green travel for next academic year and benefit from a 20% discount and entry into a prize draw to win 400 books. Contact Sarah Clyne at sclyne@thekmgroup.co.uk or visit www.kmcharityteam.co.uk/wow
