A NATIONWIDE Building Society survey reveals that although 80 per cent of 11 to 16 year olds are savers, 51 per cent of young people say that no-one talks to them about saving.

Of the 49 per cent that do talk about saving with others, 96 per cent talk with their parents and just two per cent speak to teachers at school.

Questioned about who they would ask for advice about money, 80 per cent said their mother compared with 54 per cent who would talk to Dad.

Only two per cent would quiz their teachers, whereas 14 per cent would happily visit a building society or bank.

Nationwide’s survey showed on average boys and girls aged 11-16 save £300 per year.

Stuart Bernau, Nationwide’s executive director, advised young people to “save with a financial institution which consistently offers good rates and keeps its products simple and easy to operate”.
