£1.2m five-bedroom house, previously The Swan pub, on sale in Sutton Valence near Maidstone

We’ve all got a favourite village boozer, but have you ever imagined what it would be like to live inside your local?

What was once The Swan, a historic pub in the village of Sutton Valence, has been transformed into a stunning family home.

The former pub, which dates back to 1413, was originally built as a Wealden Hall House, a traditional timber-framed property often found in Kent and East Sussex during medieval times.

The Swan served up pints for decades until it closed its doors to the public in 2013 and has since been turned into a five-bedroom property that is now on the market for £1.2 million.

However, many features of the original building have been kept in place and the snug, which is located in the inn’s dining room, is still very much reminiscent of a public house.

The rest of the pub’s layout has also been maintained, making it unique when compared to other family homes on the market.

There is also a grand inglenook fireplace, original window etchings, roof beams, lofted ceilings and an indoor canopy, which was part of the pub’s traditional seating area for nobility and has been recreated during the renovation.

The house boasts five bedrooms, including a master suite, four bathrooms and a kitchen that leads out onto the stone terrace.

The terrace and spacious south-facing garden have spectacular countryside views over the Weald and plenty of sunspots to enjoy during the summer months.

The outside space also includes a barn which was previously used as stables but has benefited from a makeover and could now be turned into a gym, playroom or summer house.

The pub was once the centre of the village and is still within walking distance of local amenities such as the Post Office and two nearby pubs that are still open for business.

The county town of Maidstone can be reached in less than 25 minutes by car and historic landmark Leeds Castle is only 10 minutes away.
