You could undertake activities identifying areas for improvement, support internal and external stakeholders, or oversee the execution of projects and programs.

Commercial Officers Emily Brimelow and Kayleigh Proctor initially joined BAE Systems in Rochester on the business trainee scheme, where they were exposed to different parts of the business. On completion of the scheme, they decided to work in Commercial.

Emily said, “Even as a trainee, I felt trusted, and was provided with a variety of experiences. In my role as Commercial Officer, I get to work with different customers, teams and products, plus I work on international and US Government contracts. I also received a silver Contracts Achievement award, and got to travel to Washington DC to collect it.”

Meanwhile Kayleigh adds, “I’ve been involved in some amazing projects, and work on international contracts. I was also part of a focus group tasked with driving process improvements in the business, for which our team received a silver contract achievement award – it’s great that the business recognises employees for their efforts.”

Ashley O’Hara also gained a rounded view of the business as a trainee, before settling in Procurement as an Assistant Buyer.

Ashley notes: “My background and interest in Engineering made Procurement a good fit. My role is really engaging and I get to be close to the products – purchasing parts, and managing relationships with our suppliers.”

Employee wellbeing is a focus at BAE Systems, and employees consistently praise the positive and collaborative working culture.

“What’s great about BAE Systems is the emphasis on mental health support in the workplace,” continued Ashley.

“All employees have access to Mental Health First Aiders, a support app, and helpline. BAE Systems in Rochester has various clubs too; from the weekly football society meetings to the onsite quizzes, I’ve had the opportunity to make friends with people around the business.”

Mike Burlison, senior project manager, joined the business just over a year ago.
