Bullet trains could make an early arrival

High speed domestic rail services from Kent to London are likely to start early, with passengers getting a limited preview service this summer.

The 140mph Class 395 trains begin service on December 13 but progress in preparations means that rail operator Southeastern wants a preliminary service months in advance.

These would be on two routes, from Ashford International and Ebbsfleet to St Pancras International.

It is believed that the early service could consist of three trains in the morning peak and three return ones in the evening.

A spokesman for Southeastern said the company hoped to introduce this provided driver training and other technical preparations were completed in time.

Judith Armitt, managing director of Ashford’s Future, said the high speed trains, taking people from Ashford to London in 37 minutes, would make the town even more attractive as a business location and place to live.

She said: "The fact that Ashford has been chosen for the preview service is great news and will give us an early taste of the benefits to come when the high-speed service is fully operational."

Ashford is home to the fleet of Class 395 high speed trains, which are set to revolutionise rail transport in the south east. Japanese train manufacturers Hitachi opened a state-of-the-art train depot and maintenance centre in late 2007.

The announcement is also a welcome boost for both Dartford and Gravesham, with many hoping the new bullet service will make the two towns a more attractive place for business and a place to live.
