The data has been compiled by pet insurance firm Petsure.

Deciding on the right name for a new animal, it says, can be ‘tricky’ with everything from the creature’s personality to how the name sounds when it is called out-loud, among the things to consider.

That said, explains the firm, some names are leaping out as being far more popular than others thanks to an in-depth study of Petsure policies and the names customers are currently settling on for their animals up until March this year.

Luna takes the top spot for both dogs and cats, says the data.

The name is also proving to be particularly popular among dog owners of Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds and among feline owners of Ragdolls, Bengals and British Shorthairs who too have lent towards the name.

Overall the name Teddy falls into sixth place in the list - behind Bella, Milo, Willow and Poppy - but yet Petsure say it’s currently the top choice for families with Cockapoos, perhaps due to their teddy-like appearance?

Those with Jack Russells love the name Bella – second in the top 20 – while Bear, Loki, Zeus and Shadow feature highly among dog parents of German Shepherds.

Despite the name Reggie not making the overall top 20, it is a name favoured by owners of Staffie dogs suggest policy data, who also like the sound of Blue, Skye, Milo and Ruby for their animal.

While the data says customers with Golden Retrievers have been picking names including Cooper, Willow, Milo, Bonnie and Poppy in large numbers.

Disney names feature more heavily among cat owners than dogs, points out Petsure, with Nala and Simba cropping up among a number of breeds including British Shorthairs and Bengal cats.

Luna also takes the top spot among Moggies, followed by Bella and Willow while the silky long coated Ragdolls also have Teddy, Coco, Loki, Lily and Blue in the mix.

When it comes to choosing the right name - a spokesman for Petsure suggests owners give their new pet time to settle in before making any firm decision alongside ‘trying it out’ by calling the name aloud for a few days.

They added: “Choosing a name for your new pet is a special and personal experience, but can be a tough decision.

“Giving your pet a short name with no more than two syllables could help with recall. A simple and concise name may also prevent any confusion with other words and phrases.

“Your pet is an individual, so taking the time to learn their personality can help to guide your name choice.”
