Leon Johnson, Sandwich Town's Kent League overseas player, has been called up by the West Indies for next week's ODI tri-series in Canada.

The 21-year-old all-rounder, in his second season at Sandwich, played well for Antigua in the Carib Beer Series during the winter and the former West Indies U19 captain has continued his good form for Sandwich even though they have been struggling in the Kent League Premier Division.

Sandwich chairman John Jones said: "In terms of our league position it's a bit of a disaster for us, because it means that we will lose Leon for three games.

"But as the same time it's a great honour for the club. Who would have thought that when Leon arrived here last summer, he would be called up by the West Indies a little over a year later?"

West Indies play Bermuda next Wednesday and then Canada two days later, with the tri-series final to be held on August 24. The West Indies are using the tournament as a warm-up for next month's Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
