Man dies after being hit by car in Eynsford High Street

A driver has been arrested after a crash which killed a man out walking his dog.

The victim, in his 60s, was struck around 7pm yesterday by a black Range Rover car along the A225 High Street, towards Sevenoaks.

He died at the scene. Police confirmed a 63-year-old man from Eynsford was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He was taken into custody while enquiries continue.

Two parked cars were damaged during the collision.

Lizzy Thompson, manager at the Castle Hotel, in High Street, said at around 8.30pm a young man came in with a brown labrador which belonged to the victim.

Miss Thompson, 24, said: "He said a car drove into a few vehicles and then knocked over an old man who was going for a walk. He saw the whole thing. He was asking me if I knew the man who owned the dog. He looked really shaken up.

"He had just seen the whole thing and the dog was running around. So he was asking if anybody knew the family of the old man. He was just trying to help. The dog seemed fine. I had a party on so I left it at that and he went to speak to the police."

Road were closed between Tabsfield Hotel, Eynsford Road, and Castle Hotel until after 9pm. One local restaurant reported that guests were phoning at about eight o'clock, to say they would be late because of traffic.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or if they saw either the pedestrian or Range Rover beforehand, to call the SCIU appeal line on 01622 798 538 or email sciu.td@kent.police.uk quoting RY/DS/011/19.
