Home on the market in Westerham with view of Churchill and has connection to Alice In Wonderland

Whether you are admirer of Winston Churchill or a fan of Victorian author Lewis Carroll, the perfect house for you has just come on the market in Westerham.

Owl House is a five-bedroomed home dating from the mid-1800s, in the heart of the village, with a view over the green.

Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister during the Second World War, whose oratory did so much to inspire the nation on to victory during our "darkest hour" lived not far away at Chartwell in the village and a bronze statue of him on the village green is visible from Owl House.

The statue was given to the country by the grateful people of Yugoslavia for British assistance in freeing them from Nazi tyranny. (Yugoslavia has since broken up into the separate states of Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina.)

In addition, the property was once the coach house to the larger adjacent house known as The Breaches.

The Breaches was home to Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famous Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass.

Alice was a daughter of Henry Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church at Oxford, where Carroll studied. Carroll was a close friend of the family and often invented stories for Alice and her sisters. Alice liked one so much she begged him to write it down and give it to her, which he did, calling it at first Alice's Adventure Underground.

Alice died in 1934, aged 82, and is buried in Lyndhurst in Hampshire at her husband's Reginald Hargreaves' country property, but villagers still recount the legends of Alice's Rolls Royce with its distinctive number plate A1 parked outside Owl House.

Owl House includes a south-facing paved terrace, with lawns leading to a stream and is being marketed by Savills at £1,395,000.
