The M25 was shut between Surrey and Kent after a serious crash.
Police were called just before 7am after a Vauxhall Astra left the carriageway between Junction 6 and Junction 5, near Sevenoaks.
It travelled down the embankment before coming to a stop on Water Lane, near Limpsfield in Surrey.
The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition. No other injuries have been reported.
There is currently a full closure of all four lanes of the M25 anticlockwise between Junction 6 and 5.
Water Lane is also closed northbound after the junction with Park Road.
Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses after the crash.
A spokesperson for the force said: “These closures are likely to remain in place for several hours while we gather the evidence required for our investigation into the collision.
“We appreciate that this will unavoidably cause disruption for motorists and apologise for the inconvenience.
“Officers are working hard to get the lanes reopened as soon as possible.
“Were you travelling along the M25 between J6 and J5 this morning between 6.45am and 7am?
“Do you have any CCTV, dashcam or helmet cam footage that might have captured all or part of this incident?
“If you have any information that may assist our investigation, please get in touch.”
