Fatal Costa Coffee crash victim revealed as 74-year-old from Rye

Investigations continue following a tragic incident on Christmas Eve that resulted in the death of one woman and left several others injured.

A 74-year-old woman from Rye, East Sussex, passed away after a black Audi drove through the window of a Costa Coffee shop, in Westerham, on Thursday morning.

The woman was in the shop with her family when the car, driven by an 88-year-old man, ploughed into the shop at around 10.30am.

No arrests have been made following the crash, and police said an inquest into the woman's death is unlikely to be opened until the New Year.

Two men and two women were taken to hospital with serious injuries while another woman suffered minor injuries.

Officers are still investigating the crash and are appealing for witnesses.

A Costa spokesperson has confirmed the store will continue to be closed over the next few weeks.

A statement read: "Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and their families who have been affected by this very sad and shocking event. We’re working with local authorities to offer all possible support during their ongoing investigation."
