Student Millie-Rose Lingham saw the damage to the road caused by a burst in a six-inch diameter pipe as she drove past this afternoon.

The 18-year-old student, who lives in nearby Sevenoaks Weald, said: "We came up to it, and at first it did just look like a burst water main.

"But as we slowly drove past, you could see that a whole part of the road had shifted down, and there was just water flooding out. "There is a bus stop there, and half of it had just completely sunk."

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed a burst water main had caused part of the road surface to sink.

He said: "It was reported to us at 11.12am and officers remain in attendance for road safety reasons."

Mark Watson, South East Water distribution manager, said: "To restore customer supplies while we repair the water main we have installed temporary pipework which bridges the burst, therefore customers who may have been experiencing low pressure or no water in the area should now see their supplies beginning to return.

"To ensure the safety of motorists and our repair team temporary two-way traffic lights have been set up while we complete the repair."
