Inquest into death of Sheerness baby Kaiden McEwan-Reeves

Mystery surrounds the death of an 11-week-old baby who was found unresponsive at his home in Sheerness.

Kaiden McEwan-Reeves was born prematurely after 29 weeks on July 5 last year and remained in hospital until September 17 as doctors tried to manage various health complications.

Once he was discharged, he was living well with his parents and twin brother Ethan, in a "warm and friendly" home in Victoria Street, an inquest at the Archbishop’s Palace in Maidstone was told.

However, when his mother, Deborah McEwan, went to check on him after laying him down to rest on September 25 she noticed his complexion had changed and she couldn’t hear him breathing.

Paramedics were called and Kaiden was rushed to Medway Maritime Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after, despite resuscitation attempts.

A post-mortem found no clinical symptoms which gave any explanation as to why he died, and recorded the medical cause as a sudden unexpected death in infancy.

Coroner Kate Thomas said: “It is clear to me there were no concerns in relation to his health or care prior to his death.

“Kaiden was a young man who was born prematurely and clearly had some complications by way of his health, but nevertheless these issues were being monitored, he was being treated, and he was progressing normally for a pre-term baby.

"I'm always conscious that the inquest is a step in the grieving process and I try to give grieving families the answers but unfortunately there are some where we don't know, and here, we just don't know" - Coroner Kate Thomas

“Medical evidence shows no real explanation for his death and there is nothing which could assist the court in reaching a conclusion as to why he died.

“He was born a twin on July 5, 11 weeks premature, after a difficult and medically complex pregnancy.

"He was deemed medically fit to be discharged on September 17.

“On September 25 he was found unresponsive and although medical attention was provided at home, he could not be resuscitated.”

Addressing Mrs McEwan, she added: “It’s unfortunate the inquest has not been able to provide you with the answers you seek.

“I’m always conscious that the inquest is a step in the grieving process and I try to give grieving families the answers but unfortunately there are some where we don’t know, and here, we just don’t know.

“I’m very sorry for your loss, it must have been tragic.

“I can only hope that in time there is some help and assistance for you.

“I’m conscious that you have Ethan and you must carry on as a mother because you have him. It must be incredibly hard in these circumstances.

“If I was to make any comment, having looked at the evidence I have seen it doesn’t appear there was anything that could be pointed in your direction or your family’s.

“I can’t suggest you could have done anything to prevent this, it’s just one of those tragic things that has happened.

"I appreciate this is a terrible predicament for you to be in.”
