Up to 40 properties in Minster will be affected after a burst water main caused cracks in the road and floods in driveways.

Work is ongoing to cut off the water which is expected to leave nearby homes with either no supply or low pressure.

Southern Water said they are working with Kent Highways and are hopeful they will be able to divert water from another pipe.

Two-way traffic lights are likely to be needed while the repair is carried out and traffic management crews are at the site near the Harps Inn.

A Southern Water spokesman said: "We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the burst and would like to assure customers that making the repair and stopping the flow of water is a priority."

Eyewitnesses reported seeing 2ft high jets spraying through cracks in the kerb in Minster Road at 10.40am this morning.

Pressure then cracked open the tarmac and water bubbled through into neighbouring driveways.

The damage was caused after a four-inch water main burst under the road.

Resident Sam Gillham rushed home from work when he heard about the situation.

The 20-year-old said: "I got a phone call at work from my next door neighbour but one to tell me to get down here.

"The water flowed right down in to my driveway and reached about two bricks high at its peak.

"I have had a look inside and luckily there is no damage to the house itself."
