The borough’s regeneration projects have had a £100,000 cash injection – in the form of an art scheme.

Art at the Centre is aimed at placing art and culture at the centre of ambitious regeneration projects.

The grant has come from Arts Council South East and is the second phase of partnership funded activities.

The other funding partners include Swale council, Kent County Council and the South East of England Development Agency (SEEDA).
The £100,000 grant will be used to set up a mobile space which will act as a gallery, consultation and workshop space.

The mobile space will travel between locations running a series projects to directly involve the people of Swale in the creative regeneration process.

It was also go towards a series of temporary public art displays and a studio complex for artists in Queenborough and Rushenden which will be created from converted shipping containers.

The areas of focus for the project are Queenborough and Rushenden, Leysdown, Sheerness and Milton Creek.

There are opportunities for artists to become part of an artist hub at the Queenborough work spaces and there will be plenty of free workshops and events for members of the public to attend to celebrate and learn about creativity in Swale.

Cllr Gerry Lewin, the council’s portfolio holder for sustainable planning and culture said “Art at the Centre was a successful project that the council was proud to be involved in.

“Culturally-led regeneration is the key to engaging those who would be unlikely to attend statuary consultations, and including artists in the early stages of regeneration leads to innovative design in the area and provides lasting outcomes for communities”
