Two major events due to be held in Queenborough this weekend have been cancelled due to snow and ice.

Foxley Road’s official lights switch-on had been scheduled to take place tomorrow night and the annual Torchlight Parade through the town, booked for Sunday afternoon, has also been postponed indefinitely.

Lisa Baumback, from the Foxley organising committee, said: “Unfortunately it is cancelled for this weekend as its much too icy round here and having so many people here for the BBQ etc would not be safe, especially as people always insist on bringing cars round and we really don’t want anyone to get hurt.

“But the residents will still have their lights on and we will still be taking donations for charity as always. We will try to re-arrange for when the road conditions improve.

“It is a shame but hopefully we be able to have the fundraising event later in the month.”

Town councillor Jackie Constable said they are hoping to rearrange the Torchlight Parade for next Sunday.

She said: “This is a major community event for Queenborough and the Island, but the conditions are too bad to allow it to go ahead this Sunday.

“The route the parade takes is very icy, so we have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel. We hope to be able to reschedule for Sunday, December 12, subject to the road closures being allowed.”
