Sheppey fundraisers have done their bit to help out victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Members of the Rotary Club of Minster-on-Sea have donated £590 to pay for a container of emergency equipment to be shipped to the country.

They have donated via the charity ShelterBox, which has a response team working to help people who have been affected.

A box contains a tent, basic cooking utensils, bedding, buckets and bowls for collecting water as well as water purification equipment.

The typhoon, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded on land, struck on Friday, November 8, killing thousands of people and leaving thousands more in a desperate situation without food and clean water.

An international aid effort is underway to try and help survivors.

Club members decided to help out as president John Gurton is a Medway Pilot and has come across many Filipino crew members who have had family directly affected by the disaster.

Mr Gurton said: “I’m very pleased to have made a contribution, especially when I have had direct contact with family members of those involved.

“The money came from our charity account which was boosted last year by the beer festival – so most of the Islanders have donated.”
