Three fire crews were sent to tackle a large grass blaze on Sheppey this evening.

The first firefighters arrived on the scene near Linden Drive, Sheerness, about 8.30pm.

At around 9pm it is believed the fire was brought under control.

A resident of nearby Queensway said many people were outside watching the drama.

There are no reports at present of anybody injured or property damaged.

She speculated the blaze could have been started deliberately.

It is believed an area of land stretching more than a quarter of a mile was affected by the fire.
