Sheppey Crossing closed following crash on A249

A man was hit by his own car while changing a tyre on the Sheppey Crossing.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Sheerness-bound carriageway of the A249 between the bottom of the bridge and Cowstead Corner roundabout at 10am.

A man in his 60s had been changing a tyre when his car was struck by another vehicle, pushing the car into him.

It is reported the two cars involved were a white Toyota van and a Kia people carrier.

The man suffered an ankle injury and was treated at the scene before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

Traffic going onto the Island was diverted via the Iwade turnoff and the Kingsferry bridge so the vehicles could be recovered.

Taxi driver Tony Stevens drove past the scene of the collision.

He said: “It looks like a van and a people carrier. The people carrier is in lane one and has damage to the rear driver's side. The van’s front nearside has come off.

“I saw two ambulances and at least four police cars. Traffic tailed back along Sheppey Way from Cowsted Corner to just past the turnoff for Elmley Nature Reserve."

In July, Highways England reduced the speed limit on the stretch of road from 70mph to 50mph following the deaths of a mother and son, Deborah and Marshall Roberts, on the crossing in July last year.
