The Sheerness Inshore Lifeboat was called to the scene at 4.26am to be on hand to rescue the man from the water if he fell.

But the crew was stood down an hour later after it is believed police officers persuaded him to come down. No further details about the man are known at the moment.

The highest point of the £100m crossing, which opened in July 2006, is 30m.
