A decision on a controversial plan to build a Sainsbury’s on the Island is due to be made tomorrow (Thursday).

It follows a site visit to the home of the former HBC Engineering in Power Station Road, Halfway, where developers hope to build the £25 million store and filling station.

About 10 residents joined members of Swale council’s planning committee, highways representatives and developers at the meeting on Tuesday morning.

It had been due to be discussed last month but councillor for Queenborough and Halfway, Mick Constable, suggested the committee visit the site before making a decision.

Although many people have welcomed the news for the competition and jobs it will bring, many residents have serious concerns about traffic – particularly the mini-roundabout at the junction of Power Station Road and Halfway Road and the already busy traffic lights at The Halfway.

Cllr Jackie Constable said: “On the whole I think people are for the actual application, but the problem is the traffic. That’s the main concern.”
