Drugs and drink fatal for young man

A 28-year-old man died of misuse of drugs, an inquest was told.

Stuart Devine, from Minster Road, Halfway, near Sheerness, was found dead in his flat on June 16 after an anonymous tip-off to the emergency services. Mr Devine was a known drug user and had been drinking the day of his death.

A post mortem showed he had high levels of morphine and alcohol in his system. His morphine level was more than four times higher than the level at which it becomes potentially fatal.

Pathologist Dr David Rouse told the inquest: "There is no evidence of forced injection which suggests this was a consensual administration of the drug. The most likely cause of death would be alcohol and opiate poisoning."

Mr Devine had been drinking with his brother Andrew during the day and police later found out that it was his brother who had made the anonymous phone call. By then Mr Devine had been dead for several hours by then.

Several beer cans were found in a wheelie bin outside his flat and the alcohol level in his blood was found to be well over the legal drink-drive limit.

Coroner Roger Sykes said: "I am satisfied that Mr Devine died from alcohol and opiate poisoning and by misuse of drugs."

* Andrew Devine, 42, was found dead at his mother's home in Sheerness last month.
