‘Explosions’ warning for Sheppey, Whitstable and Thanet as Shoeburyness operator QinetiQ carries out further testing this week

Those living along the coast are being warned of ‘explosions’ on Monday.

They are expected to be heard along the county’s north coast – from Sheppey, through Whitstable and Herne Bay and into Thanet.

The booms will be from the Ministry of Defence as it continues its regular weapon testing at its range in Shoeburyness, just over the Thames Estuary in Essex.

According to QinetiQ, which manages the range on behalf of the MOD, “explosions may be heard” on Monday and Wednesday, and gunfire on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The dull booms will be no stranger to those living along the north Kent coast, which regularly can hear the noises – especially when the wind blows in a southerly direction.

A number of tests and practices are carried out at the site to ensure weapons systems for the armed services are safe and function as intended.

This can include multiple tests of weapons, including firing, shaking, rattling, rolling, dropping, heating and freezing equipment and munitions.

There is also the safe disposal of any stressed or life-expired ammunition carried out at the site, close to Southend.
