Friends and family of a schoolboy critically injured when he was hit by a car have organised a summer fun day to raise money to pay for treatment when he returns home.

Miles Rogers is still being treated at the Children’s Trust rehabilitation centre in Tadworth, Surrey, after he suffered a severe brain injury after the accident outside Sheppey Rugby Club in Lower Road, Minster, last October.

In the first three weeks of his treatment, the 11-year-old had six operations, including having both sides of his skull removed as his brain had swelled so badly.

His mum Kelly, of Penny Cress Road, Minster, said the family had a setback recently with Miles’s treatment.

The Minster Primary School pupil had an operation to fit titanium plates into his head at the end of May.

Although the procedure went well, a week later he contracted a severe infection and was rushed in for emergency surgery and had to have the plates removed again.

Kelly said: “The infection has cleared up but his rehab has gone back quite a lot now.

“He will have the plates put back in eventually but we can’t put him through that at the moment – it’s made him so weak.

“He’s very tired and the rehab has gone back a couple of months as they think it will take him more than a month to get over it all.”

Miles’s £1,000-a-day treatment is being paid for by Eastern and Coastal Kent PCT and the family is guaranteed funding until at least September, when they hope to get another three months.

But when Miles does come home, he will need equipment and care, which is why the fun day has been arranged to raise more funds.

The Smiles4Miles fun day will take place on Saturday, August 4, at the rugby club from midday.

There will be plenty going on including a bouncy castle, assault course, refreshments, games and more.
